The choice is almost always cost-driven. Restoration runs $75–$150 for both lenses. Replacement runs $400–$1,200 per side, plus a couple hours of labor at $130/hr. For most cars, restoration is the obvious answer — but not always.
When Restoration Works
- Lenses are yellow, hazy, or cloudy but structurally intact
- No visible cracks larger than a hairline
- Reflector and bulb housing inside are still bright/silver
- No moisture or condensation trapped inside the lens
When Replacement Is Required
- Lens is cracked or has impact damage that breaks the seal
- Internal reflector is corroded, peeling, or has gone dull/gray
- Condensation pools inside the lens housing (failed seal)
- Lens has been DIY-sanded so many times it's optically distorted
The Cost Conversation
Even on luxury vehicles where OEM lenses run $800+ per side, restoration is worth trying first. Worst case you spend $100 and still need to replace. Best case you save $1,500+. See full NJ pricing here.
Common Mistake: Aftermarket Housings
Cheap aftermarket lens assemblies look like a deal at $150/side, but DOT-compliance issues and poor beam patterns are common. Many fail NJ inspection. If you must replace, OEM is the safer call — or have a pro restore the originals.
