Headlight degradation is gradual, which makes it easy to miss. You don't notice the night drives getting dimmer until you ride in someone else's car or get caught in fog. By the time it's obvious, you've usually been driving under-lit for a year. Here are the five signs to act on.
1. Yellow or Amber Tint
Healthy lenses are crystal-clear. Any yellow or amber tint means the polycarbonate is oxidizing. See why this happens.
2. Milky, Hazy, or Foggy Appearance
Run your finger over the lens. If it feels slightly rough or chalky, the UV coating is breaking down. This is the stage where restoration is fastest and cheapest.
3. Weak Night Driving Performance
If you've started avoiding unlit back roads or your high beams feel pointless, your lenses are blocking 50–80% of the bulb output.
4. Visible Pitting or Cracks in the Coating
Inspect with the lights off in shade. Tiny lines, spider-web cracks, or sandpaper-like texture are all advanced UV damage. Still restorable — but don't wait.
5. NJ State Inspection Warning
New Jersey inspectors can flag dim or cloudy headlights as a safety concern. Restoration is dramatically cheaper than the $400–$1,200 per side that OEM lens replacement runs.
