The single most common question we get: 'how long does this actually last?' The honest answer is anywhere from 6 weeks to 5+ years, and the difference comes down to one thing — whether the lens gets re-coated with a real UV protectant after sanding.
Typical Lifespans by Method
- Toothpaste / baking soda / spray-on cleaners: 2–8 weeks. No UV coating applied.
- Drugstore DIY kits with wipe-on sealant: 6–12 months. Acrylic sealants degrade in sun.
- Mid-tier DIY kits with aerosol clear coat: 12–24 months if applied perfectly. Most are not.
- Professional restoration with 2K urethane or ceramic UV coat: 2–5 years.
- Professional restoration with paint-protection film (PPF) overlay: 5–10 years.
For a fair side-by-side, see our DIY kits vs. professional restoration breakdown.
What Affects Longevity Most
- Where you park. Garage-kept lasts 2–3x longer than south-facing driveway.
- Climate. NJ summers are hot and humid, which accelerates coating breakdown.
- Car washes. Brush washes scratch the UV coating; touchless or hand wash is gentler.
- Quality of the UV coating used. Aerosol clear coats fail far sooner than 2K or ceramic.
How to Make Results Last Longer
- Park in a garage or under cover when possible
- Hand wash with car-safe shampoo, no household cleaners
- Avoid bug spray and gasoline contact with the lens
- Apply a fresh top coat every 18–24 months for outdoor-parked vehicles
When to Re-Restore vs. Replace
Restoration works as long as the lens itself isn't cracked, pitted to the point of light scattering, or yellowed all the way through. If you're past that, see our future restoration vs. replacement guide.
